Parallel Archives
What does it mean to have a family archive that is both devoid of permanent locations and identities, and filled with temporary spaces. In this project I am inserting family photos onto ancient Greek and Egyptian artifacts (two of the countries my family has primarily resided in) as an attempt to insert my family into physical history. What does it mean to reclaim archives from your country’s history? What happens when one’s family items are preserved in the style of institutional archiving? As this is likely what happened with all of the archives we see in museums today. If this is the case and many artifacts that we have preserved are simply family items that have survived hundreds of years,
why not my family’s items? Or yours?
